Doors not normally open to the public will welcome visitors across Pembrokeshire this month when the county supports the Europe-wide Open Doors programme.
Places of real historic or artistic interest not normally accessible to the public have agreed to open without charge. These European Heritage Days are organised in Wales by the Civic Trust for Wales on behalf of CADW and the Welsh Assembly.
In the north on September 20th and 21st guided tours will be taken along a new trail from St Brynach church to Nevern Castle, exploring the ancient history of Nevern, two tours on each day beginning at 11am and 2pm.
Mid-county by arrangement with Haverfordwest Civic Society, Slebech Hall (the house not the conference centre) will open between 3pm and 5pm today, Sunday, September 7th.
Dating from 1776, Slebech is the largest country house in Pembrokeshire, in a glorious riverside location once occupied by the Knights Hospitallers of St John.
At 4.15pm Mark Muller will talk briefly about its remarkable dynasties, the Barlows, de Rutzens and Philippses. Also on view will be the romantic ruined hospitallers’ church.
Other Open Doors will be Pembroke Dock’s Gun Tower Museum on Saturday and Sunday of the first three weekends of the month, Carew Cheriton airfield’s restored control tower on the first three Sundays, Tenby’s Tudor Merchant’s House, with costumed staff making Welsh cakes, on September 13th 11am to 5pm and the Colby Woodland Garden the same day between 10am and 5pm. Churches also figure largely including St Mary’s Church, Warren, Flimston Chapel, Bayvil, Hodgeston, Little Newcastle, Llandeloy, Llanwnda, Manordeifi, Mathry and Pontfaen.
