Dualling battle taken to Ireland

Pembrokeshire's assembly members are planning to cross the Irish Sea in their bid to get the A40 dualled.

They say that the main road is a vital artery to the Irish ferry port at Fishguard and is heavily used by Irish haulage firms.

"The A40 is practically an extension of the Irish trunk road system and we are planning to visit Ireland this winter to drum up support for our dualling campaign," said south Pembrokeshire assembly member Angela Burns.

She will be travelling with her Preseli Pembrokeshire counterpart Paul Davies to meet transport chiefs and politicians from southern Ireland.

Both AMs have joined forces with the county council in a bid to put pressure on the Welsh Assembly Government to dual the road.

"We have both lobbied for years to get this busy main road made into a dual carriageway and we have just met council transport chiefs to discuss how we can best work together on this joint goal," added Mr Davies.

Mrs Burns said that they would be taking the council's concerns to Cardiff Bay.

"The council has been carrying out studies into the road and we shall be taking their findings to the Welsh Assembly Government," she said.

"A judicial inquiry is underway into the matter and we hope that economic and safety reasons of dualling have been proven."

Has Mrs Burns ever been to Ireland? For if she had, she would realise that there is no dual carriageway on the other side either.

I cannot understand what information she will be able to glean by this jolly to Ireland.

And as for Pembrokeshire of being an extension of the Irish Trunk network, will the Irish be paying for the upgrade - I think not!

No! It'll be the taxpayers of Wales stumping up the cash, those same taxpayers presumably paying for Mrs Burns trip to the Emerald Isle!

i have travelled extensively throughout Ireland (without having my arms and legs broken) and I can only agree with mr rob above. ireland is basically a third world country that dwells on this fact to receive massive amount of european funding and a huge uncontrolled immigration. it smells of the time the council sent quite a large party of members, at our expense, to see how some godforsaken scottish island burned their rubbish in an incinerator, what a waste of money.

I cant understand this pressure to dual the A40. I can see good reason to bypass a few places but nothing more than that. A journey from Milford to London (250 miles) takes less than 5 hours. If anyone needs to bring large and heavy goods into the county then we have a quite good access to the largest motorway possible - the sea. Which raises another point - why didnt the AM's think to put a clause into the LNG and power station developers planning applications that they would fund a road improvement scheme once their heavy lorries bearing construction materials have finished ripping up the A40?

good point mayday. the national government were the ones keen to impose such a dangerous project on a low population area, the least they could have done was funded the road improvement. i do agree with dualling of the A40 actually but this trip won't achieve anything and is just a PR exercise and a jolly for the boys and girls again. with the port facilities in the area most stuff could be shipped in by sea anyway, being that most of that kind of stuff is manufactured abroad because it's a lot cheaper anyway.

A bit interesting too that Mrs Burns needs to take the concerns of the council back to the Assembly.

Hasn't John Davies been cuddling up to the Ieuan Wyn Jones already?

I don't think I've ever heard of a 'judicial inquiry' either? There are judicial reviews and public inquiries. Maybe Mrs Burns is getting confused! I suppose there is an awful lot to take in, what with her being a novice and all!
