With the help of dedicated volunteers from around Pembrokeshire, Wales has become the world’s first Fairtrade nation.

Pembrokeshire’s three Fair Trade towns — Haverfordwest, Milford Haven and St Davids — along with active groups in Narberth, Crymych and Fishguard, have helped lead the way in giving developing world producers a fair price for their produce.

“Thanks to the help of volunteers from Pembrokeshire and other areas the progress Wales has made towards becoming a Fairtrade nation has been extraordinary,” said Chris Urack, from Fair Trade Wales.

To celebrate the achievement, Pembrokeshire will be receiving the Fairtrade flag, which will travel through every county in Wales.

The flag will be in Pembrokeshire from January 10th to 23rd in various places including Castell Henllys, Milford Haven, Pembroke Dock and Haverfordwest.

“This is a great honour for Wales and shows how a small country like ours can make a difference,” said First Minister Rhodri Morgan.

“The progress made in two years is a testament to the enthusiasm and passion of the people of Wales.”

Chris Urack added: “In order to maintain and improve Wales’ position as a Fairtrade nation, the awareness and consumption of Fairtrade by the people, organisations and businesses of Wales must continue to grow.

“Everyone in Pembrokeshire can help us with this by switching to Fairtrade.”
