An application for Pembroke Power Station is expected to be given the green light in the next month.

RWE npower originally submitted the application in 2005 for the compact industrial facility that would be located near Pembroke, on the site of the former oil-fired power station. The company, which is awaiting UK Government permission, expects to get the go-ahead in the next month with the hope of taking control of the site in February.

Andy Smith, from RWE npower gave a presentation to the economy overview and scrutiny committee at County Hall in Haverfordwest on Tuesday.

Around 1,500 to 2,000 jobs will be created during the construction phase of the plant with approximately 25% of those jobs being recruited from people within travelling distance of the site.

Mr Smith stressed that there would be no intrusive work in the Haven during construction of the plant.

RWE npower has signed a deal with engineering company Alstom to secure the potential construction of the power station and they expect when operation starts it will create 100 quality long-term jobs.

Mr Smith also said the station would bring a long-term benefit to the local economy of around £10million each year.

The company also plans to hold public presentations as soon as it receives approval.
