Coastguards are reminding dog walkers to keep their pets on leads after a jack russell dog disappeared over the coast path yesterday (Monday).

Charlie, a white jack russell, had been walking with his owners near Dinas Head. He had run away from them while chasing sheep and plunged over the cliff.

Both Fishguard lifeboats were launched at around 5pm to scour the area for Charlie. They searched the coastline, along with Fishguard coastguards, but the dog was not found.

The incident comes a week after police issued a public warning to dog owners reminding them of livestock laws.

It is illegal for dogs to worry livestock and farmers who believe that their animals are being worried are within their rights to shoot the offending dog.

"Coastguards would like to stress that all dogs walking the coastal path should be kept on a lead at all times," said a spokesman at Milford Haven coastguard HQ.

"This would ensure the safety of the animal and other coastal users and ensure no distress to livestock of local farmers."
