Pembrokeshire College driving academy offers free course for college students

Students at Pembrokeshire College are benefiting from a new on-site driving academy which will help them become better drivers.

The Go For It driving academy, run by local instructors John Llewellyn and Mike Hughes, who have 30 years of advanced driving experience between them, was set up to reduce road traffic accident casualties and deaths on Pembrokeshire’s roads.

Mike is a retired grade one advanced police driver and John is a former trainer for fire service drivers. They are both members of the Institute of Advanced Motorists.

The academy has already attracted interest and approval from Pembrokeshire Road Safety, AM Paul Davies and MP Stephen Crabb.

“The academy is designed for student learner drivers to develop the skills necessary to pass their driving test and then progress through intermediate and on to advanced driving skills,” said John. Mike added: “The course is free to students and is there to help students through five phases of learning including the highway code and the theory and hazard perception tests.

“The academy lessons complement driving lessons, either with the Go For It driving school or with another provider.”

One of the country’s biggest insurance companies, Zurich, is prepared to offer Pembrokeshire College students a 10% discount on their car insurance on completion of the academy driving course.

This offer, which was set up by local insurance brokers Hedley Davies in Haverfordwest, is another indicator that the academy is recognised as helping to improve road safety.

Pembrokeshire College has also provided resources and a training area, all helping to make the academy become a centre of excellence. Principal Glyn Jones said: “Putting safety first is imperative to safeguard our young people.

“Unfortunately, we will never eradicate driving accidents, but we can help to ensure that our students become more safety conscious and better drivers.”
