Family includes Llanfallteg pub in quiz prize

A family is saying cheers to their pub quiz venture with a difference where getting the questions right could see a lucky contestant win the pub itself.

A prize package worth more than £300,000 — including the country pub, living accommodation and a holiday cottage — is on offer to the winner of Steve and Christie Goymer’s quiz, which costs just £20 to enter.

The couple had been happily running The Plash Inn in Llanfallteg after buying it nearly five years ago.

But the arrival of their second son Ioan, who has Down’s Syndrome, made them rethink their lifestyle.

"He and his brother Rhys have got to come first in our lives," said Christie.

"Ioan is doing well and reaching his targets, but we need to devote more time to him. Having the pub was setting everything off balance, so last April, we decided it was time to put our priorities in order."

Christie and Steve reluctantly decided to sell The Plash, but found interested buyers were unable to raise the cash.

So they devised the on-line quiz, which was ready to receive its first entries on Tuesday.

"All people have to do is answer four multiple choice questions and then complete a tie-breaker saying why they would like to win the pub," added Christie.

"The winner will get their own property and business completely mortgage free, they can sell it, run it or put a manager in; whatever they choose. We will even offer them four weeks’ free advice if they are new to the pub trade."

The couple, originally from Nuneaton, plan to stay in west Wales once they can move out of The Plash.

"The aim is to have 30,000 entries in three months which will generate £600,000 — that will cover all our overheads, including legal fees, and enable us to make a 5% donation to the Down’s Syndrome Association and the British Heart Foundation," said Christie.

The draw will still go ahead if there is a 90% entry, but if it’s only 50%, there will be a cash draw instead.

Christie added: "It’s all absolutely legal and above board, and some lucky person stands to win the lifestyle we have enjoyed, as well as their own business, for a mere £20. It’s got to be worth giving a go!"
