Pembrokeshire will be Dublin-up for the Emerald Isle in a new film which is forecast to be the comedy hit of 2009.
Locations in the Preseli mountains and Manorbier will be the focus of a four-day shoot next month for Round Ireland With a Fridge, adapted by comedian Tony Hawks from his best-selling book.
Over 10 years ago, he accepted a drunken bet that he couldn't hitch-hike around the whole of Ireland with a small fridge. The journey changed his outlook on life as well as leading to him writing the hilarious book documenting his surreal journey.
The privately-funded film is due to be released later this year, and other filming locations are Surrey, London and Dublin. "We were originally going to film for the whole six weeks in Ireland, but actually found that pubs in England look more Irish," said Natasha Applebaum from production company Fridge d'Or Films One of the most bizarre situations of the entire book -where Tony and an Irish barman take the fridge surfing on west coast Ireland Atlantic waves - will be filmed on Manorbier beach, while the Preselis will be used for hitch-hiking location shots. The crew will be in Pembrokeshire between June 10th and 13th.
Tony is to star as himself in the film, which also features Josie Lawrence and Irish comedian Sean Hughes and singer Brian Kennedy. Billed as 'a life-affirming British comedy', the film is directed by Ed Bye, who worked on Kevin and Perry Go Large, Red Dwarf and French and Saunders.
The film's choice of Pembrokeshire as a location comes after the high-profile Harry Potter Shell Cottage shoot at Freshwater West, with the Robin Hood blockbuster, starring Russell Crowe, also filming on the beach between June 15th and 30th.
