Derek Brockway presents platinum eco award to Hayscastle School

Pupils at Hayscastle Primary School are holding a big celebration after achieving Eco-schools platinum award in Wales.

After eight years of environmental improvement, the school has gained a fourth international green flag, and with it the platinum trophy, which was awarded by BBC personality Derek Brockway in Cardiff. Environment minister Jane Davidson was also present.

Over the last two years the pupils have decided and planned many ways to improve their health, increase recycling, reduce litter and waste, save energy and water and become better global citizens. The school grounds have become a haven for wildlife and a fun place to learn and play.

The children and staff will be raising the green flag during their environmental day on June 24th at 1pm at the school. During the afternoon, the key stage two pupils will be giving educational talks within the school grounds on various environmental matters.

All pupils will have the opportunity to take part in various competitions, which will be judged during the afternoon. There will be stallholders in attendance, and refreshments will be served in the school canteen.

Programme co-ordinator Rhian Taylor said: “It is vitally important that children are made aware of local and global environmental issues which could possibly have an effect on their lives in the future. Having been an Eco-school since 2000 the pupils know a great deal about being green and sustainable. We are proud to be called a platinum eco-school’.
