AM Paul Davies supports A487 pavement plea

Hopes have been raised that a “dangerous” Fishguard road, which has no pavement and a 60mph limit, may soon be made safer for pedestrians.

About ten households and a caravan site are situated on the side of the A487 between Parc-y-Morfa farm and Ty Newydd cottages, to the east of the town. There is no walkway on the half-mile stretch of road and the speed limit is 60mph.

“I walk the stretch every day as it is good exercise but it is terrifying,” said Ty Newydd cottage resident, Paul Griffiths.

“I have had my hat blown off by passing lorries and when you have a stream of traffic coming at you, it is very dangerous as only the first one in the line sees you and pulls out.”

Mr Griffiths has now enlisted the help of local Assembly Member Paul Davies, in getting the road made safer.

“I have walked a stretch of this road and seen for myself how dangerous it is,” said Mr Davies.

“These households have effectively been stranded from Lower Town and things are worse in the summer when the traffic is heavier.

“It is ridiculous for the residents to have to get in their cars for such a short journey but for many of them, especially those with children, it is the only option.”

Mr Davies contacted the Trunk Roads Agency (TRA) about the matter and has been told that a new footpath is being considered under the community schemes programme.

A more detailed study will now be undertaken by the TRA, looking into the possibility of linking Lower Town, the viewpoint and the caravan park.

A bid for funding is expected to be submitted to the Welsh Assembly this October.

“I shall be adding my voice to those of the residents in calling for this work to be undertaken,” said Mr Davies.

He added: “This is a positive first step but we must keep up the pressure.”
