Pembroke Dock Town Council vows to fight parking charges

Pembroke Dock Town Council has vowed to stand by the local chamber of trade in its fight to hold off parking charges in the town.

A Pembrokeshire County Council overview and scrutiny committee meeting recently voted to hold a public consultation on the introduction of car parking charges in Milford Haven, Pembroke Dock and Pembroke.

Representatives from Pembroke Dock Chamber of Trade spoke at a recent town council meeting about a poll they had conducted on the controversial issue.

James Parfitt said they had asked members for their response to county council proposals to introduce car parking charges at Gordon Street, near Asda and Lower Meyrick Street, offering various options.

The first was that they agreed with the proposed charges (starting at 20p per hour); the second was an idea put forward that the first hour of parking would be free of charge; the third option was reduced charges, in accordance with those proposed for Milford Haven; the fourth was to refuse any charges point-blank and the fifth option was ‘any other ideas’.

“We have had various meetings with the county council and we wanted to give the overall view of the chamber,” said Mr Parfitt.

“Based on the response, 75% of the membership said ‘No’ to any form of parking charges.

“We are asking you at the town council to support us on that,” he added.

Council members agreed and pledged their support for the campaign. Meanwhile, an online petition has been launched on the chamber of trade website (www.pembrokedockchamberoftrade.co.uk) as well as a downloadable poster for campaign supporters.

The county council will issue a public notice next week, giving a consultation period of 21 days. Any views or objection should be submitted by November 11th.

I'mglad for P Dock - having to pay to park there would mean all the shops closing apart from Tescos!

Would having to pay either 20p for the first hour's parking or nothing at all for the first hour really cause all the shops to shut except Tesco, people in the Pembroke Dock area must be really hard up then, I'm surprised they can afford to run a car at all! Where did they intend to go shopping instead then on their 20p worth of fuel?
How come those that can afford to run their Mercedes, BMWs, 4WD etc suddenly run out of cash when it comes to the exhorbitant fee of 20p to park?

What are PCC going to do with the extra money we pay in higher and new charges?

The report doesn't mention this directly, but indications from the consultants report suggest more enforcement or control of parking is required, which has also been reportedly commented on by the Cabinet Member for Transport.

I see your point, billbob, but most town centres are struggling especially when there are are out of town shopping facilities. Even if there is free parking in town centres with no out of town shopping, as soon as Tesco, Focus etc set up just outside town, trade in the centre falls. You only have to look at most English towns which tried this experiment, 25 to 30 years ago to see that it kills town centre shopping and they had to reintroduce stores back into town centres to revive them. If people really cared about their town centres they would shop there regardless of parking fees. If we the public had a say about out of town shopping centres we would keep more retail outlets in town.

Maybe all our 20p ( we will be lucky) parking charges will help to pay toward the chief executives salary of £160,000+ a year. Why are we still paying to cross the Cleddah bridge?
