Pick up a pen and protest – that was the message from the mayor of Milford Haven as the consultation period for new car parking charges began this week.
The public notice detailing the proposed car parking charges in Milford Haven, Pembroke Dock and Fishguard was officially published yesterday (Wednesday) activating a 21-day consultation period.
Milford Haven mayor councillor Tony Eden, who is strongly against the introduction of charges, said he would be encouraging as many people as possible to pick up a pen and submit letters.
Cllr Eden said: “There are no benefits whatsoever and it has already been proved in the past it is not financially viable.
“The more people that protest the better.”
He added that it was paramount that the protests from residents were heard.
As well as a letter of objection from the town council, the mayor will also be asking all town councillors to write individual letters highlighting their objections.
Milford Haven, which currently enjoys free car parking, could see charges introduced in Charles Street, Robert Street and Market Square, if the proposals go ahead.
The Milford Haven Business Circle has written a letter of objection and chairman of the group Vivian Phillips echoed Cllr Eden’s sentiments and said it was vitally important that people write and submit letters.
“I know there is never a good time to introduce these charges but they could not have picked a worse time.”
“The clock has started ticking now and we must do everything we can to encourage people to write in and object to it,” she said.
Members of the public have until November 11 to submit their objections – which must specify the grounds on which they are made – to Ian Westley, director of transportation and environment at County Hall, Haverfordwest.
