The man in charge of investigating Pembrokeshire's unsolved murders has been appointed Dyfed- Powys Police's new head of CID.
Detective Chief Superintendent Steve Wilkins has taken over the role from DCS Mears who has moved to Carmarthenshire division.
DCS Wilkins moved to Pembrokeshire at the age of 17. He worked locally in the area before joining Cheshire Police in 1980. He transferred to Dyfed-Powys Police in 1992.
He has extensive experience in the CID, 27 years of his 29 years service has been as a detective.
He was also seconded to the National Criminal Intelligence Service as Head of Region for the north west of England and prior to returning to force he was the head of intelligence for the UK.
He came back to Dyfed-Powys Police five years ago as a Detective Superintendent and has worked as Senior Investigation Officer on numerous cases. He has also worked closely with the Foreign and Commonwealth Office in trying to secure justice for the family of Kirsty Jones who was murdered in Thailand in 2000.
DCS Wilkins will continue to be in charge of Operation Ottawa which is the review into the murders of Helen and Richard Thomas and Peter and Gwenda Dixon. These are the only murders unsolved in the Dyfed-Powys Police area. A man has now been arrested and charged in connection with these, and other, crimes.
“It is a great honour and privilege as a career detective to be the senior detective within the force and I look forward to continuing with the high standards set by my predecessor," said DCS Wilkins.
“We will continue to support the police divisions to build a criminal justice system which allows our public to feel safe and to deliver on the policing pledge.
“I also aim to maintain and build on the confidence our communities have in Dyfed-Powys Police to deal with all levels of crime and in particular serious and organised crime and major crime.”
