Saundersfoot soldier, Corporal Nick Webster-Smith, laid to rest

2:15pm Thursday 26th November 2009

The final tributes will be paid to Corporal Nick Webster-Smith today (Thursday), as his funeral takes place in Brackley, Northamptonshire.

Corporal Webster-Smith, aged 24, who formerly lived in Saundersfoot and attended Tenby’s Greenhill School, was one of the five British servicemen killed in a shooting attack in Afghanistan earlier this month.

He had served with the Royal Military Police since 2005 and was a fortnight into his second tour of duty in Afghanistan when he was killed by a rogue Afghan policeman who was being mentored by British troops.

The funeral will take place at 11am tomorrow at St Peter’s Parish Church, Brackley, the town where Corporal Webster-Smith’s family moved to some two years ago.

Leading mourners at the funeral will be his parents, Richard and Jacqueline, brothers Chris and Sam and sister Hannah, together with girlfriend Emma Robinson. A number of friends from Pembrokeshire are also planning to attend.

A British Army spokesman said: “The family requests that donations be made to a selection of charities in lieu of flowers. A collection will be held during the service, and all money raised will be donated to The Royal British Legion, The Royal Military Police Benevolent Fund, The Army Dependents’ Trust and The Special Care Baby Unit at Horton Hospital.”

Anyone wishing to make a donation can send a cheque payable to any of the above charities to W.J. Franklin and Son, 30 High Street, Brackley, NN13 5IJ.
