Swansea crown court hears of Fisher's "confessional" calls

A jury heard today (Wednesday) how a father confessed to stabbing his daughter during two telephone calls to his startled niece.

Zoe Mabbott, aged 18, said she was on holiday in Devon with her mother, the sister of Gary Fisher, when she answered a call on her mother's mobile telephone.

She told Swansea crown court, in a statement not contested by the defence, that she recognised the voice of Gary Fisher.

The prosecution claim the calls were made just hours after he had murdered his daughter Sasha Jones, aged 17, by stabbing her to death as she sat in the passenger seat of his Ford Fiesta while it was parked at the back of the Angel Hotel in Cardigan.

Miss Mabbott said, "He asked for my mum. I said 'she's not here' and it went dead.

"I called him back. He said, 'I'm really, really sorry but I've done something wrong.'

"I asked 'what?' and he said, 'I don't think you want to know'"

She said the telephone went dead again but Gary Fisher called back.

This time he said, "I'm sorry but I've just killed your oldest cousin. She's lying in the car and it's freezing. I've just stabbed myself with a butcher's knife.

"I have to go now because the police might trace this call. I won't get into trouble for what I've done."

Miss Mabbott said Fisher sounded scared but she described him as being "quite calm."

She told her mother about the calls.

Ms Susan Mabbott said in a statement her daughter had also told her that Fisher had said, "I'm going to finish it later and don't worry, I will not go to prison. I'm going to take the battery out of the 'phone so they can't trace me."

Ms Abbott telephoned her mother who contacted the police.

Fisher's Fiesta was caught on a police camera two hours later and slowed down by a stinger device spread across the road. Shortly afterwards, Fisher swerved into a layby and collided with a parked camper van.

Police found the body of Sasha still in the passenger seat.

Fisher, aged 48, of Solihull in Birmingham, denies murder.

The court has heard how the family moved from Birmingham to Cardigan in the early 1990s. The relationship broke down and Fisher returned to Birmingham, but had recently begun visiting west Wales and taking out his three children.

Chris Clee QC, prosecuting, told the jury Fisher had told witnesses that Sasha, who had made a complaint of rape against a local man, had been "in pain" and that he had ended her suffering.
