Burton Ferry could be the home to an innovative new marina.

Pembroke Marine Group is seeking planning permission to build a marina at the NATO jetty at Burton Ferry and a public exhibition outlining the proposed development will be held at the Bridge Suite, Cleddau Bridge Hotel on Wednesday, March 10th, between 10am and 8pm.

The new development is a joint venture by Maritime Horizons and Cardiff Marine Group, which could bring more than 30 jobs to the area, along with increased tourist trade.

The development will offer a ‘dry stack’ facility, which sees boats lifted out of the water onto a structure on land. Cardiff marina is the only other place in Wales that uses this system.

The jetty itself will also be used, with boats being craned over the wall into the water.

Nathan Hewitt, director of Maritime Horizons, said: “The Pembroke Dry Berth Centre is a new and innovative concept for Wales and the UK as a whole.

“It will help to further market the west Wales coast as one of the finest sailing destinations in Europe, which in turn will attract more visitors, benefiting the local economy.”

The developers also intend to build a retail element to the project, with six or seven units for rent.

Mr Hewitt added: “We have to be very careful, our intention is not to destroy other businesses in the area.”

Local historian Simon Hancock said: “Burton has a very rich maritime tradition. Neyland Marina opened in 1985 and it has provided tremendous benefits in terms of job creation and putting the town on the map.”

Anyone with feedback can contact Mr Hewitt on 020 8699 7445 or e-mail nathan.hewitt@maritime horizons.co.uk.

Burton does not need a marina - the one at Pembroke Dock hasn't been built yet and that already has planning permission. This is a cynical money-making exercise from the developer, not of any benefit for us.

We were going to have a Marina in Fishguard 25 years ago, nothing ever came of it, other than hot air. I think as this economic depression bites deeper, existing Marinas will suffer greatly. On a different point, with the amount of unemployment in Pembrokeshire, why are Milford port authority using contractors from outside the county? to paint handrails around the Marina.
