Pembroke Dock pensioner appears before Haverfordwest magistrates to admit to planting hoax bomb outside Bush Street Dental Surgery

An octogenarian who left a hoax bomb on the steps of a dental surgery in Pembroke Dock was angry about charges for dental work, Haverfordwest magistrates heard today.

Eighty-four year-old Peter Henry McShane admitted eight charges, including placing a box made to look like a bomb outside Bush Street Dental Surgery on February 15th.

McShane gave his address as Borough View, London Road, Pembroke Dock. He had been living at Ettrick House, Laws Street, a building he owned, divided into flats, at the time of the offences.

Prosecutor Ellie Morgan said that in 2007 McShane was charged £183 for dental work. This made him angry as he was a NHS patient. However, the money was later refunded by the NHS.

She told the court that since October 2007 the practice had experienced various incidents of damage. “It seems that much of that seems to have been down to Mr McShane,” she said.

The court heard that police were called to a suspicious package outside the dentist surgery on the evening of February 15th. The surrounding streets were evacuated before the bomb disposal unit arrived, detonating the device which was found to not be a genuine bomb.

McShane was among those evacuated and while speaking to an officer considered telling him that it was not a real bomb but did not.

Defence solicitor Shaun Dyer said that McShane had intended to cause a nuisance to the surgery and it was a “juvenile prank that has completely gone out of control.”

Mr Dyer emphasised that McShane had not called the police to say there was a bomb and when he spoke to the officer during the evacuation he realised the situation had gone beyond his control and he clammed up.

McShane will be sentenced at Swansea crown court on April 9th.
