St David's Church, Llanddewi Velfrey, needs organathon volunteers

A Pembrokeshire church is calling on musicians to help pull out all the stops to raise funds for much-needed repairs.

St David's Church at Llanddewi Velfrey is staging a 12-hour 'organathon' in a month's time, to help towards the £100,000 it needs to avert the threat of closure.

Some of Wales' finest musicians will take it in turns to play toccatas and fuges on the church's organ, and volunteer organists with an hour to spare are needed to complete the line-up.

A special website is being set up to broadcast the event to the world. People will be able to watch online, email the site with requests for their favourite tunes, as well as make donations.

"We have persuaded several eminent organists to take part," said priest-in-charge at St David's, Rev. Jonathan Copus. "But we need more. And with the help of the public, we hope to hear the widest possible variety of music, from Bach and Beethoven to the Beatles and even Knees Up Mother Brown."

The team of organists includes hymnologist and broadcaster Hugh Ashley; composer and RSCM [Royal School of Church Music] area secretary Peter Carder; St David's Cathedral organist Alex Mason and former assistant Cathedral organist Michael Slaney MBE.

Anyone who would like to take part in the event on April 12th can contact the Rev Copus on 01994 419834 or revjc@dentron.co.uk
