Legendary landlady Bessie Davies celebrated her 80th birthday at her popular north Pembrokeshire pub last weekend.

Bessie, who runs the Dyffryn Arms at Pontfaen, Cwm Gwaun, was inundated with cards, chocolates, flowers and well-wishers on Saturday.

Family, friends and customers of all ages dropped in on the famous octogenarian, who has run the pub for nearly 40 years, and is one of Pembrokeshire’s oldest landladies.

Bessie’s unique pub has featured in national publications and is well known for continuing the tradition of Hen Galan, where the new year is welcomed in on January 13th, according to the old Gregorian calendar.

A special birthday cake was given to Bessie as part of the celebrations, decorated with dragons and pint glasses, and visitors filled the small pub, where beer is still served from a jug, throughout the day.

Bessie said: “It was a full house. People have been good, everyone from the area turned up. It was a good day.”

The day was a joint celebration as local organisation Dreigiau Cwm Gwaun also raised £2,000, which was donated to Fishguard Stroke Club.
