A lorry filled by generous Western Telegraph readers and churchgoers faced thieves, impassable roads and three border crossings as it made its epic journey to Malawi recently.
A Haverfordwest church group joined forces with a local missionary with projects in Malawi and packed a lorry full of second hand computers; bikes; clothes; shoes; toys; sewing machines; football strips a dentist’s chair and many other items.
A donation of more than 1,000 law books now makes up a third of the entire law library.
In December, the 18-tonne lorry was waved off by the congregation of Emmanuel Church, heading for Blantyre, Malawi.
There, Wiktor Chichlowski and his wife Sue, from Camrose, run Fisherman’s Rest, a Christian mission and tourist retreat, as well as Tilitonse (All Together) a community trust.
Organisations that made generous donations to the scheme included Spittal School; Pembrokeshire College; Emmanuel Church; Pembrokeshire County Council and St Thomas Green Surgery.
Wiktor said that the donations will make a huge difference and he is already planning to take another lorry over in the future.
“It will be wonderful to try and make that Pembrokeshire and Blantyre connection and it will be really nice to expand on it,” he added.
