Controversial parking charges launched today Controversial parking charges launched today

Controversial new parking charges have been launched across Pembrokeshire today (Thurdsay).

New charges will be introduced in Parc Y Shwt, Fishguard, Robert Street, Market Square and Lower Charles Street in Milford Haven, Towns Moor in Narberth, South Quay, Pembroke and Lower Meyrick Street and Gordon Street in Pembroke Dock.

Seasonal charges will also be introduced in Long Street, Newport and West Street in Fishguard.

All charges will apply between 9am and 5.30pm and for the first time, all disabled motorists will also be charged.

Motorists displaying a valid blue badge will have to pay for parking in all county council charged car parks and will receive an extra hour of free parking.

I cannot believe that the revenue received from these tiny car parks even covers the cost of the machines and policing of the system, let alone contribute to the council's coffers. It seems to be a charge just for the sake of it which will have adverse effects on the local economy which are well documented.

It cost us all at least £67,000 for someone to tell our councillors to start charging for parking in some of its most economically depressed towns. Do we really need local councillors, they seem to be out of touch with the rest of us, especially when it comes this growing economic quagmire, Pembrokeshire
is slipping into. I can just about understand parking charges and some limitations, in the busier towns such as Haverfordwest and Carmarthen, where parking is a big problem, but adding parking charges to struggling ghost towns like Milford Haven, Fishguard, Pembroke Dock etc is an absolute brainless decision and completely unecessary. Time to abolish these archaic local councils and save the rate payers a bundle.

I was surprised and disappointed to hear that even people who have a physical impairment are now required to pay parking charges. This is grossly insensitive. We should surely be moving in the opposite direction, and providing free parking throughout the county for both the disabled and the over-60s.

As a Blue Badge holder, I parked in a disabled space in the Market Square car park in Milford Haven today. Not being aware of the recent introduction of parking charges for Blue Badge holders in Pembrokeshire car parks, I did not buy a ticket. On my return I was approached by a Council worker who told me he was about to place a notice on my windscreen notifying me of my misdemeanour. The cost of parking in this car park? 10p! A machine has been installed to dispense tickets for parking there at god knows what cost. The car park has a total of 16 parking spaces so the maximum revenue at any one period is a massive £1.60! Who are the donkeys at PCC who dreamed up this ridiculous waste of money? The logic behind this decision beggars belief. The money would have been better spent in policing the huge number of able bodied people who illegally park on the pavements and double yellow lines in Charles Street at all times, rather than targetting the minority of people that choose to park responsibly in a car park.
