The commercial face of Haverfordwest is changing with new stores moving in and others expanding.

Joining the eagerly anticipated Marks and Spencer store at Withybush is Boots, which is moving from its established town centre site to a much larger premises.

County councillor, Mark Edwards, who represents Prendergast ward, said: “It is perhaps a little surprising that Boots is moving out of the town centre but with Marks and Spencer going to draw so many people to the area it is going to be fantastic for the retail park up there, if they can sort the parking out.

“But I think it is a bad thing for the town, it’s swings and roundabouts really.”

He also hopes that a bigger store will mean more jobs for the town.

Also coming to the town is a favourite on High Streets across the country, Greggs the bakers. The new store on Bridge Street opened on Thursday.

“It’s another big name coming to Haverfordwest. If KFC were to come that would be the icing on the cake, at least we are competing with Carmarthen now,” added Cllr Edwards.

But despite many rumours, KFC has said it is not coming to Haverfordwest in the near future.

KFC spokesman, Nina Arnott said: “It’s great that there are so many KFC fans in Pembrokeshire, and we’re sure they’ll be pleased to know that we’re looking to build a restaurant in Haverfordwest to satisfy the strong demand.

“We would love to open a new drive-thru in the area, but we’ve not yet been able to find any suitable locations yet, so we’d be keen to hear from anybody with news of a potential site.”

Not everyone is pleased to see big chains coming to Haverfordwest.

Manager of the Welsh Bakery, one of Haverfordwest’s oldest bakeries, Julie Bartie, does not think Greggs will be good for the town.

“It’s the little businesses that are going to suffer, people like us, Snowdrop Bakery and Samuel’s.

“For little business like these to keep on going for so many years is an achievement. The Welsh Bakery had been in Milford Haven for 30 years and here for 20 years but we can’t compete with their cheap prices.”

Julie added that all Welsh Bakery products are made using local ingredients and made fresh every day.

“It’s a bit of bad news, people will try it but hopefully they’ll come back for the quality,” added Julie.
