Milford Haven School and Tasker Milward VC School pupils attend Big Bang Cymru at the National Waterfront Museum, Swansea

From space technology to science experiments, from rockets to race cars, pupils from Pembrokeshire will be exploring a diverse array of subjects at Big Bang Cymru today (Tuesday).

Pupils from Milford Haven School and Tasker Milward VC School will be among 400 from Wales, attending the science and engineering event at the National Waterfront Museum.

The day is designed to demonstrate how the study of science, technology, engineering and maths can make a real difference to the lives and future career opportunities of today’s young people.

Big Bang Cymru features a host of interactive displays including experiments, explosions, simulators and shows from a range of exhibitors.

The Swansea Discover Club is running a series of hands-on science activities designed to encourage girls to consider careers in the sector including the chance to build a glacier, design a bridge and exploring forensic science techniques.

Swansea Metropolitan University will showcase a variety of its students’ computer animation projects and Techniquest is sending a range of mobile science exhibits, while Spaceconnections is planning to send a paper aircraft into outer space and a group of physics undergraduate students, the Physics Busters, will enthrall, educate and entertain the pupils.

Careers Wales West is managing the event. Chief executive, Ray Collier said the event is the only one of its kind to be taking place in Wales this year.

“Big Bang Cymru is unlike any other event we have ever run for young people in south west Wales and promises to be a fantastic day for everyone who comes along,” he said.

“It will give young people from across the region the opportunity to learn more about the importance of science, technology, engineering and maths while having great fun. There will be plenty of scientists and engineers at the event for the youngsters to quiz about their jobs and hopefully many of them will discover that a career in one of these fields could be perfect for them.

“The pupils will also have the opportunity to showcase their projects and enter the National Science and Engineering Competition as well as get inspiration from the winner of last year’s UK Young Engineer of the Year, Shawn Brown. We are delighted to have the opportunity to host this event and feel sure that it will be a great success.”
