Environment Agency monitors situation as highest tides of the year approach

4:48pm Wednesday 8th September 2010

Environment Agency Wales is monitoring conditions at sea as the highest tides of the year are set to hit the Welsh coast tomorrow (Thursday) and Friday.

The high tides are predicted to affect the whole of the Welsh coastline.

Initial indications are that the conditions will not lead to flooding of homes, but the agency will continue to keep an eye on forecasts over the entire period of the high tides.

Agency officers are monitoring sea surge, wind and waves as any deterioration in the forecast conditions could lead to tidal flood warnings being issued.

They are, however, also in regular contact with the Met Office and will receive regular updates if the weather situation changes.

Environment Agency Wales officers are also out checking key flood defences and assets to make sure they are in good condition.

Chris Mills, Director Environment Agency Wales said: "If the weather conditions at sea stay as they are we do not think that we will need to issue flood warnings. But as we all know the weather can change very quickly.

"Our staff are out on the ground and monitoring the situation and we will inform people if there is any threat of tidal flooding to their community.

"If people are concerned, they should call our Floodline number on 0845 9 88 11 88 for the latest situation in their area. They can also register for our free flood warnings service which can give people valuable time to prepare themselves if the worse was to happen."
