Amended plans put forward for the Commerce House site in Market Street, will be discussed by town councillors on September 5th.

The proposals, submitted by Red Dragon Developments, include shops on the ground floor and basement, and six flats above, together with the construction of seven houses at the rear of the site.

Commerce House, which was a prestigious department store, was declared a dangerous structure in 2003 and had to be propped up by five miles of scaffolding until its demolition.

Lower Market Street was closed to traffic for 21 months and the pavement on the Commerce House side was re-opened to pedestrians only three weeks ago after hoarding was moved further back.

Steve Hopkins, of the Bed Shop, which is next door to the site, said: "September 26th is the third anniversary of the closure of Market Street, which is quite significant."

He added: "I have no problems with the amended plans or the building of new town houses at the back of the site.

"They are very much the same as others developed by Red Dragon and they seem very nice.

"The frontage facade will be a facsimile of what was there originally. That has been the case right through the various plans that have been drawn up, as the site is in a conservation area."

Mr Hopkins said he and other traders in Market Street, all of whom had previously been affected by the road closure, would like to see the development finished as soon as possible.

"But I suspect that there is going to be involvement from Cadw and that might cause a hiccup," he prophesied.
