Hundreds of vehicles and motorbikes from the present day to the early days of motoring will take to the road tomorrow (Sunday).

Much loved classics from all over the UK and striking cars from the 21st century will set off from Withybush Showground for the 14th annual Western Telegraph Pembrokeshire County Run.

This year the run will be celebrating the 50th anniversaries of both the British Heart Foundation and the legendary “E” type Jaguar.

Vehicles will start arriving at the showground from 8am and set off at about 10.30am. They will then follow an 85-mile route around the county heading first to St Davids before passing through Fishguard to Eglwswrw, and then down to Narberth and Carew.

Jeff Edwards, who organises the run with his wife Sian and a small committee, said a few changes had been made this year to take into account the soaring cost of fuel.

“Many of the entries will be doing a round trip of about 200 miles on the day just to take part on the run,” he said. “So the route this year has been reduced by about 15 miles. There is also the choice of an alternative shorter route on the last stages of the run thus saving about 20 miles.”

This shorter option will divert cars from Narberth, to the A40, cutting off the loop to Carew.

Also new this year is a refreshment stop at the Dyfed Shire Horse Farm in Eglwyswrw where there will be discounts available for people taking part on the run.

The run will be raising money for the British Heart Foundation and the ITU at Withybush General Hospital, two organisations close to the hearts of Jeff and Sian, with the sale of Western Telegraph programmes and a raffle at the start and finish lines.

“Sian and I are grateful to all the sponsors, participants and spectators for helping to make the run so very successful for the county,” said Jeff.

“In particular, we thank the Western Telegraph, British Heart Foundation, Pembrokeshire Agricultural Society, Dyfed Powys Police, Pembrokeshire County Council and MegaPrint and Haverfordwest Lions for all their help and assistance.”

Entries will still be accepted up to and on the day.
