It was the end of an era last week when business partners Bill Griffiths and Clifford Rogers retired from Pope's Garage, Haverfordwest.

Both had worked at the Cambrian Place premises for 47 years.

The business dates back to 1919 and in 1926 it became Pope's Garage.

Bill and Clifford began work there as mechanics in 1959 and took over the business on the death of Phillip Pope in 1980.

Over the years they have seen many changes not only in cars, but also the environment around them.

"Just opposite our garage, we had Arnolds Yard, the bus depot, and the old sawmills which burnt down," said Bill.

New road systems involved the demolition of properties and the creation of the Salutation Square roundabout and Freemen's Way.

The two men also saw the demolition of Cambria House, the old council offices, and the construction of the new county hall.

Clifford said: "We've enjoyed working here and we have serviced a lot of cars over the years including Triumph Stags, Triumph Heralds, Vauxhall 12s, and Austin 7s, to name just a few.

"If someone asked me 12 months ago whether I wanted to retire I would have said yes. But now that the day has come, I'm not so sure."

Bill added: "Over the years we have made a lot of friends among our customers. But we feel it's time to move on."

The garage will now be taken over by Dylan James.
