Pembrokeshire County Council cabinet member will keep full allowance

A county cabinet member will still receive his full special responsibility allowance of £14,756 despite part of his responsibilities being taken over by another member.

County councillor Huw George had been the member with responsibility for children, young people and the Welsh language.

However, following the critical Estyn and CSSIW reports, Cllr Anne Hughes took over the children and young people portfolio as part of her safeguarding role on the cabinet.

The Welsh language and education portfolio remains with Cllr George.

At full council on Thursday, Cllr Michael Williams asked whether Cllr George’s allowance would be reduced to reflect “his reduced level of responsibility, bearing in mind he is no longer responsible for children and young people”.

Leader John Davies confirmed his allowance had not been reduced.

He stressed that they had still made savings following the previous reduction of the cabinet from ten members to eight at the start of the year.

I think a BIG sort out is needed. Remember this at the next election.

PCC is just a club, with many members thinking it their right to hold office, and when they retire to pass on the baton to sons(and daughters).
I have never been able to understand why electors have never been able to see the big picture and vote for candidates who would make a real difference to the way the County is run(and if they fail can be voted out).
Roll on next May!

Get it right WT. Cllr Anne Hughes did not take over the children and young people portfolio as part of her safeguarding role on the cabinet. Instead of another cabinet member taking over the children and young people portfolio, Anne Hughes was drafted onto the cabinet to take up that role. On 6th September Councillor Davies said: “I welcome the return to Cabinet of Councillor Hughes and given her previous experience, she is able to hit the ground running. " So there was unnecessary extra expense created there which has now been topped up by Huw George still receiving his full allowance. Never mind though, they saved us money "following the previous reduction of the cabinet from ten members to eight at the start of the year." What planet are these people on?

Tough measures ahead!! Yet they can pay Huw George his full salary for doing half of what he's paid to do .Saved by cutting down on two members !!
We the voters could save a lot more by voting the majority off members out next year .
Then we might have a democratic PCC in place.

What I would like to know is how many of the so called 'Independent' members are actually Independent?

The vast majority of the 'Independent' members belong to the 'Independent Political Group'. So the term 'Independent' is really an illusion, which seems to give voters a false sense of security and well being.
I have said consistently that Pembrokeshire would be better served with a true political grouping in charge, one that would have policies, one that makes decisions itself and not abdicates responsibilities to paid officials, (very often sitting in secret) and one that can be voted out if it makes a mess of things.

The majority of time spent within his role is having his photo taken for the WT and issuing more or less the same statements.

With regard to Safeguarding... are all the Cllr's on this panel, CRB checked? Cant see how quickly Cllr Hughes took this on without being vetted?
