Man arrested after level crossing crash

A man has been arrested following this morning’s crash between a train and a lorry towing a hay trailer on the Llanboidy level crossing near Henllan Amgoed, Whitland.

Seven people were treated for minor injuries following the crash, five of whom were taken to hospital. The driver of the train was said to be “badly shaken” but not seriously injured.

There were 59 people onboard the two carriage 9.10am train from Milford Haven to Manchester Picadilly It came into collision with the lorry at around 9.55am but remained upright and on the tracks.

Four fire appliances, land and air ambulances and officers from British Transport Police and Dyfed-Powys police were called to the incident.

Firefighters administered oxygen therapy for shock and dealt with one head injury.

British Transport Police’s Sector Commander for Wales, Chief Inspector Sandra England, said: “Our investigation is continuing into the cause of the collision, including piecing together exactly how the vehicle came to be on the tracks at the time.

“As part of that investigation, the driver of the vehicle, a 48-year-old man from Llanboidy, Whitland, has been arrested this afternoon [Monday, 19 December 2011] on suspicion of endangering safety.

“He has been taken to a police station in Haverfordwest, where he is assisting my officers with their enquiries.

“Officers from the Rail Accident Investigation Branch (RAIB) are currently on route to the site and will begin their investigation on arrival.”

Measures are now in place to remove the lorry from the tracks but in the meantime, the road on both sides of the crossing remains closed.

Arriva Trains Wales said that all train s from Whitland to Fishguard and Milford Haven have been cancelled until further notice, a replacement bus service has been put on.
