Pembrokeshire county councillors given pay rise by Independent Remuneration Panel for Wales

County councillors in Pembrokeshire will get a ‘pay rise’ next year – with top members receiving a hefty boost.

It follows a report by the Independent Remuneration Panel for Wales which sets allowance bands for elected and co-opted members of county councils, fire and rescue authorities and national park authorities in Wales.

Rather than setting maximums as in previous years, the panel has prescribed basic and senior salaries. These have been set at 5% and 10% below the current maximums respectively.

This means that the basic allowance for a county councillor next year will be £13,175 but all councillors also receive an annual £500 allowance for postage, IT and telephone calls, boosting a councillor’s basic allowance to £13,675, nearly £200 more than this year.

The leader’s allowance will jump from £42,986 to £48,000 and the council’s two deputy leaders will be paid £33,960, up nearly £5,000.

Pembrokeshire Coast National Park Authority members will also see an increase in allowances with members’ basic remuneration increasing by £886. Chairman of the panel Richard Penn said: “We are making this change in response to the view consistently expressed to us by councillors across Wales that the setting of allowances should be taken out of the political arena.”

A Pembrokeshire County Council spokesman said: “The panel’s decision about levels of allowances is binding on all councils. Previously, the panel had recommended maximum permissible allowances and in Pembrokeshire, the county council had always set the levels significantly lower than the prescribed maximum.”

It's not as if the Remuneration Panel is stacked with fellow travellers is it? I mean it's just ordinary people on ordinary wages and pensioners isn't it?

The review is stacked up from the very first place starting with the fact comparison must be made with succesful FTSE companies with the same turnover as the budgets GIVENby central Gov. to these pigs at the trough.
Can you imagine any of these people holding down a job at Tescos filling shelves let alone running the company

The element of public duty and a good chance of a gong is NOT allowed as part of the criteria and it really appears to be a british disease - a french or german official would be glad to earn a quarter of these "chief execs"

It would be good to have some feedback on this story from 'Indeview' who has a handle on these sort of things within council.
I cannot help feeling that there is more to this 'mandatory' rise than meets the eye and I hope that it the story behind it is challenged either by this newspaper or within council.

They are allowances rather than "pay".

My concern has always been why the need for 2 Deputy Leaders. This point was echoes by a letter in the Mercury, last week.

2 Deputy Leaders getting betweeen them, a few quid short of £68,000 a year.

David Cameron has only one Deputy Prime Minister, so why does Pembrokeshire County Council require 2 Deputy Leaders?

Remove one and that will pay for the additional allowances for ALL County Councillors.

The Independent Review Panel has been attempting to put Councillors on a more structured basis by introducing, and now imposing, Salaries for basic councillors duties and chairmen with differing salary bands for different committees and responsibilities. It is rather hoped that this will lead to a wider more representative base of potential councillors.
So there are 60 jobs with a pay of about £13,000 pa. going in May. Any takers?

The IRP promise to introduce some check by way of performance related pay based on the duties expected to be carried out by councillors.
Hopefully, therefore, where the Leader of PCC has acknowledged that PCC councillors have not been provided with the proper information to do their statutory jobs, some cut in salaries may be imposed if this continues in the future.

I think one deputy leaders salary may be shared by however many there are.

Did I hear a rumour that ther might be two Independent Groups after the election, one old and one new? How to choose, when we electors will not be told which one a candidate will join if any after the election.

Does anyone believe these are "allowances" or expenses? They get their trough filled monthly whether they turn up in the secret bunker or not

Thank you Indeview.i rather hoped we would have the benefit of your knowledge of these things.
I have had a couple of goes myself, unsuccessfull
y, and I hope that new good quality people are now tempted into the murky world of local politics because they are desperately needed here in Pembs.
I had not heard the rumour of the IPG splitting,(is our leader is going?)but if that is true it really does open up so many options and opportunities for the 'real' political parties to make an impression.
