Residents of Fishguard and Goodwick have been told the long-awaited Phoenix Centre will ‘truly rise from the ashes’ this spring – despite the main contractor going into liquidation.
The £1.3million centre was due to open last September.
Four months later it remains unfinished.
It was revealed last week that Enzo’s Construction, which was contracted to complete the build, has gone into liquidation.
Phoenix Community Centre chairman John Deason said that despite the setbacks the centre is now on track for a spring opening.
Cled Evans Construction has now taken over the project and work restarted last week.
“We had fortunately prepared for such a possibility and had already put in place contingency plans,” said Mr Deason. “We have sufficient funds budgeted to complete the new build; albeit on a delayed time frame.”
He said plans were also well advanced to stage a community Olympiad at the centre this summer.
It is hoped this will be an annual event and will include a range of sports competitions, music events and cultural activities The Olympiad will start on May 27th when the Olympic Torch passes through Fishguard, with most of the planned events taking place in July and August.
“It seems entirely appropriate that the new Phoenix Centre will do its best to establish a true Olympic legacy that is rooted in the community and grassroots sport,” said Mr Deason.
“This year will be the Olympic year that the Phoenix truly rises from the ashes.”
