Council house rent to rise by 2%

Council house rents will rise by 2% from April this year. This will mean that average weekly rents for a council property will go from £61.63 to £62.86.

Cllr David Simpson, cabinet spokesman for housing and sustainability, pointed out that these increases were substantially less than those imposed by housing associations in the county.

He also noted that Pembrokeshire was one of only three local authorities in Wales to have improved the quality of its housing stock so that it meets the Welsh housing quality standard by March 31st next year.

“We have taken the bit and completed what we said we’d do. We’ve done what we were told to do and we’ve done it admirably,” he said.

The rent increase was approved by cabinet today (Monday). It will go to a meeting of full council in two weeks’ time for formal signing off.

In these times of austerity, any increase in living costs to the less well off section of Pembrokeshire society, is not a good idea. Surely the council should be making savings by cutting council overheads especially when it comes to decisions on councilor increase in salaries, also the mistakes that resulted in the recent £400,000 legal costs against the council, does not help the counties coffers.

£62.86 ! Phew!! When we moved into a new council house in Neyland in 1961 the rent was 17 shillings (85p) a week. (Yes I know that was 50 years ago, but when you take into account wage levels then and now I guess it's about par for the course)

After trying and trying, I could not even get a council house because it seemed those on benefits were always in a higher band than me so I had to go private and I pay much more than that each week - I wish my rent was that reasonable
