Bradley Manning nominated for Nobel Peace Prize

The former Tasker Milward pupil facing court martial for allegedly leaking US secrets has been nominated for the Nobel Peace Prize.

Bradley Manning, who faces counts including aiding the enemy over the leak of thousands of documents to the whistleblower website WikiLeaks, has been nominated by the The Movement of the Icelandic Parliament.

In a letter to the Nobel Peace Prize committee, the Parliament said: “The documents made public by WikiLeaks should never have been kept from public scrutiny... citizens worldwide owe a great debt to the whistleblower for shedding light on these issues.”

The nomimation came as it was revealed that the process for Bradley’s full court martial for allegedly leaking thousands of classified documents will begin on Thursday, February 23rd.

The soldier, who has family in Milford Haven and Haverfordwest, has been imprisoned for more than a year in the US.

Bradley has also received support from members of the Welsh Assembly.

Bethan Jenkins, AM for South Wales West, has raised a written statement of opinion in the Senedd, noting the ongoing prosecution of Bradley “and expresses hope for a free and fair trial process”.

The statement, backed by fellow AMs Mike Hedges, Aled Roberts and Eluned Parrott, also notes “concern over his pre-trial treatment at US Quantico Marine Base, including solitary confinement and denial of sleep and exercise.”
