Brown sludge is algae not sewage

Environment Agency Wales is reassuring members of the public that what appears to be washed up sewage on some beaches in Pembrokeshire is in fact just decaying algae.

Environment officers report that the Phaeocystis species of marine algae looks very similar to raw sewage, and can be spotted on beaches and in the water during this time of year.

The algal blooms can very easily be mistaken for sewage but people can rest assured that while the foams washed inshore aren’t particularly attractive their presence is a natural event.

To report pollution people can contact the Agency’s incident hotline on 0800 80 70 60.
