A climber was airlifted from Flimstone Bay yesterday (Sunday) after falling and breaking his ankle.

The man was the lead climber in a party of six from Oswestry and fell when three of the four devices attaching him to the rocks came away.

RAF helicopter 169 from Chivenor was tasked to the remote spot near Castle Martin as well as coastguard teams from St Govans, Tenby and Manorbier.

The 45-year-old male had sustained a serious break to his ankle and was airlifted directly to Withybush Hospital.

Coastguards at Milford Haven said that the emergency call had come in as a “roamer”.

“Even if your phone shows no signal you can still dial 999 or 112,” said a spokesman at the station . The call is then taken by another available mast and diverted to BT who put it through to the emergency services.

“If a member of the public makes this type of call it is important they tell us their location as soon as possible,” said the spokesman. “If we lose the connection we cannot ring them back.

“It’s important people know this type of call is available to them.”
