Orielton School celebrations in full swing

Orielton School is in the middle of a series of Victorian celebrations to mark the Diamond Jubilee, Olympic Games, the launch of a five history books and the retirement of headteacher Mark Owen.

Running up to Friday, June 29th, there is a whole host of events taking place, with parents, friends and pupils both past and present welcome.

The Victorian celebrations kicked-off with the book launch of the five school history books.

The five books are Seagull Billy; The secret diary of Orielton School 1873-1901; Orielton School – a 20th century diary’ Oswald Thomas Hitchings: unsung hero cracking his code; and Orielton 24/7: the headmaster’s diary.

The printing of the books has been subsidised by RWE npower and Valero, which means the proceeds will be going back to the school.

Friday saw the opening of the Victorian theatre in the school. Today (Monday) and tomorrow junior school pupils will give tours of the school Victorian museum A public book launch will then be held at the school on Thursday, June 28th, along with entertainment from the children.

The events will culminate in a Victorian Olympics on Friday, with parents, friends and supporters all welcome and Victorian costume desirable for visitors.

Headteacher Mark Owen, who is retiring after 24 years at Orielton, said that the school would be open until around 6pm every evening while the events were going on for people to come and buy the books, which span generations of history of the school from the 19th century to the present day.
