Four Haverfordwest M&S staff are getting on their bikes for a challenge of a lifetime that will see them take part in a 400-mile cycling relay.
Jayne Grove, Joyce West, Carly Hanks, and Michelle Taylor undertake the Bike 400 Cycle Challenge at the Prodrive race track, in Kenilworth, Warwickshire, today (Saturday).
The Le Mans-inspired 24-hour endurance event will see employees competing in teams of four, with each cyclist peddling for six hours and covering 100 miles of the track.
Jayne said: “It’s going to be tough because it’s a big track, which means that we will have to do at least 16 miles in one hour.
“When it came through head office, we decided to sign up because we all like a challenge.”
Carly added: “I am looking forward to it, but I’m worried about the lack of sleep, and the sore bum!”
The cycling team have already raised £670 when they took turns cycling on a static bike at the store.
This year, the money raised from the challenge will support three cancer charities, including Breakthrough Breast Cancer, Action Cancer, and the Marie Keating Foundation.
Jayne said: “Cancer affects a lot of people, and when we were doing the fundraising, we could tell that it touches a lot of people.”
Retail director Steve Rowe added: “2012 is going to be a unique summer and we want to make it one to remember with our biggest and most ambitious charity challenge to date – with the aim of raising more than £1million for these three truly worthwhile charities.”
The Haverfordwest cycling team will be fundraising outside the M&S store today (Wednesday).
