Dramatic rescue in Haverfordwest after 'bridge jump threat'
1:22pm Friday 27th July 2012 in News
Police, fire and ambulance personnel rescue the woman from the footbridge.
Traffic in the centre of Haverfordwest was held up for more than an hour earlier today (Friday) after a woman who had apparently threatened to jump off a footbridge was rescued by emergency services.
Eye witness Jonathan Duncan, from Milford Haven, told the Western Telegraph that he stopped his car on Cartlett Road, at about 11am, when he saw a woman standing on the wrong side of the railings on the bridge over the dual carriageway at Cartlett.
He said: "When I got to the bridge, I tried talking her down, but she was having none of it. And after about five minutes, she slipped down and clung onto the bridge.
"She was hanging down, holding onto the railings, and shouting for help."
Mr Duncan said that when the ambulance vehicle arrived, the driver parked directly below the dangling woman.
Police and fire personnel then lowered her onto the roof of the ambulance, before placing her onto a spinal board.
Witness Stacey Clark said: "She looked like she was in shock, because she was shaking as if she was having a fit."
Cartlett Road was closed off for about an hour, with traffic being diverted through Prospect Place.
