Hywel Dda Health Board unveils consultation document

Changes at Withybush Hospital will not be as extensive as feared according to the Hywel Dda Health Board consultation document approved today (Monday).

A 12 week consultation period will start today, looking at changes to services across the three counties - which includes development of specialist treatment sites at Llanelli and Carmarthen.

In Pembrokeshire the biggest change is set to be the removal of Minor Injury Units from South Pembs and Tenby with treatment moved to GPs and staff redeployed at Withybush Hospital.

An orthopaedic centre of excellence will be developed at Prince Philip Hospital, Llanelli but day and short stay cases will remain at Withybush.

Changes to women's and children's services, particularly the Special Care Baby Unit will also be part of the consultation.

A public meeting will be held at Sir Thomas Picton School on September 20th as well as a further two locality consultations will be held at Fishguard Town Hall on October 17th and Kilgetty Community Centre on October 24th.

See this week's Western Telegraph for more details.

friends just been diagnosed with cancer - lives in Pembroke - should I advise him to get an English address as so few of the best drugs freely available on the English NHS are unavailable in Wales, so few of the Docs here are proper oncologists

Free prescriptions for all in Wales!!! In England these are paid for. Funding is finite.....Wales has to make choices on how to spend the limited funding available. The choices would be made an awful lot easier if we all paid for every item prescribed. It's simple accountancy.

@Tina2 The 2 MIUs in the South were closed earlier for a period of time--what was the detriment?80% of people who went to the 0900-1700 units would have ended up at Withybush!!
@Ttoommy.You insult the fine staff at Withybush and Singleton hospitals. What is a "proper"onclogist"?

an Oncologist who specialises only in Cancer - a surgeon can do loads of ops not cancer. I don't insult the people after all THEY are not the ones who decide free parking and prescriptions get more votes than 24 life saving cancer drugs freely availible on the english NHS

For clarity it should be pointed out that an Oncologist TREATS cancer and not all cancer needs surgery. All hospitals donot offer free parking and coupled with the free prescriptions as we have had in Wales since devolution I fail to see any connection with winning votes,or am I missing something??

Not involved in this exchange but 'pot and kettle' are highly visible. Of course it's political....isn't everything?
The simple facts are that funding is limited. Whatever political leanings people may have. There will always be some unpalatable choices.

I may be faced with travelling to Swansea for specialist treatment. A pain, yes, but I would rather that and be treated locally by by someone who does not have the same level of knowledge/experience
.
The fact is money is limited and by concentrating scarce resources in specialized centres is far better than spreading things too thinly.

The Welsh NHS has an attrocious cancer survival rate even compared with England and thats one of the worst in modern advanced states so all tjhis bovine effluent about being treated locally by non-specialists with a poorer choice of life saving drugs is REALLY HONESTLY beyond me - don't you want to live? or would you prefer to be nice about withybush?
hairyballs - I think that's proof that you're blind and daft

after being diagnosed with the aggressive skin cancer called melanoma. This from a birth mark that had been with me all my life. I was within a week a patient in Morriston hospital and had it taken away same day with plastic surgery to follow and monitored for five yrs afterwards to make sure it did not re-occur.The treatment was marvellous but far from home. My family was just grateful to have such wonderful care and treatment made available to me when it was needed most.
We have to make the changes that are necessary for everyone to be able to be looked after when needed. Not how we would like it but that is the sign of the times. More of us and not enough of "them" Springs to mind.
