Couple's search for war time love token

A couple who first met at RAF Carew Cheriton nearly 70 years ago have returned to the former airbase for the third time in recent years in the hope of finding a lost love token.
Charlie and Edna Ganfield, who celebrated their diamond anniversary earlier this year, made the trip back to search for a bracelet that blacksmith Charlie had made out of silver threepenny bits for Edna, who was a fabric worker, repairing and camouflaging the Oxford and Anson aircraft.
Edna had shown off the bespoke piece of jewellery to her friends, but with death and serious wounds common at places like Carew Cheriton, they told her it was unlucky to accept such a gift so she threw it into a nearby pond.
Much has changed at the former airbase since then and, despite studying old plans of the area with volunteers at the control tower museum, the couple who now live in Surrey have been unable to locate the likely site of the pond.
Metal detectors have also been used to try and find the bracelet, but without success.
