County gears up for fun over fifties day
2:40pm Thursday 4th October 2012 in News
Pembrokeshire's over fifties can find out what is going on in the county for them at a special event tomorrow (Friday).
Letterston Village Hall will be hosting a Full of Life at 50+ information day.
Organised by Pembrokeshire County Council together with the 50 Plus Forum and the Keep Well This Winter partnership, the day will also help mark UK Older People’s Day.
Over 30 organisations will be attending to give advice and information.
Participants will have the opportunity to take part in a range of free activities including family history research, exercise classes and a special cook-off workshop.
They will be able to get their health checked, find out about learning opportunities and get their electric blankets tested.
In addition they can also brush up on computing skills, learn how to use Skype and design web pages.
The event takes place from 11am to 4pm. Places on the workshops are available on the day on a first come, first served basis.

The Older Persons Forum, now 50+ forum was required to be established by the Council as a Welsh Government initiative to enbable over 50's to participate in shaping our services, both for now ( then) and in the future. In addition we were to have a county council based Commissioner, Cabinet member David Wildman was designated by the council to represent us. (PCC democracy in action).
I think it was last year that the Older Persons Overview and Scrutiny committee received a presentation about the 50+ Forum activities. This went out of its way to assure councillors that the forum was not there to critise the council.
One of the purposes of the Plan is to identify the services we require and specifically those that cannot be met.
I am not aware that the Forum has ever been consulted about provision of services for the over 50's, or given any, and am not sure how representative it is of our views.
I think that you are on a lost cause Rockface. These jolly events are the only ones that you will be invited to. The "business" meetings of our representatives are rarely advertised.

Last year, The Council was obliged to produce " an Older Persons Commissioning Plan, setting out the way in which it would provide Adult Social Services. This is available on the Council's web-site. Incidentally this plan was approved by Cabinet, without the appendix "plan" being included in the report.
