Fishguard and Goodwick are tuning up for a top Welsh band competition, heading to the twin towns tomorrow (Saturday).

This year, for the first time ever, the West Wales Brass Band competition is to be held in Fishguard.

On Saturday October 6th, outstanding bands from all parts of south and west Wales will converge on Ysgol Bro Gwaun for an intense day of competition, ending with expert adjudication and the awards ceremony.

Goodwick Brass Band has every right to blow its own trumpet, as their continuing success has helped attract the event to the area. The band’s players often make lengthy journey to compete in regional and national competitions. This time they have the luxury of staying at home and hosting this prestigious contest.

The competition will feature 21 bands at senior level and four bands at junior level. It will be adjudicated by Philip Harper, musical director of the world famous Cory Band, and star Euphonium player Glyn Williams.

“We have worked hard to convince our friends from further east to bring their big events to Fishguard,” said organiser Tony Evans, himself a member of Goodwick Brass Band.

“We are delighted to be hosting the West Wales competition this year.

“This is the first time an event of this nature has been held in Pembrokeshire and it will be an opportunity for the people of Pembrokeshire to listen to top quality brass bands.”

The West Wales competition takes place at Ysgol Bro Gwaun from 10.30am. Tickets for the event can be purchased on the day.
