THREE Pembrokeshire lifeguards, who had travelled to southern Australia to take part in the World Surf Life Saving Championships, were involved in two dramatic real-life rescues on Saturday.

Scott Riches, of St Davids, and colleague Tom Parry, from Bridgend, were returning to harbour at Christies Beach, Adelaide, on Saturday when they noticed a vessel in trouble near rocks at the northern end of the beach.

The duo immediately raced to the scene and towed the vessel, with two adults and a child onboard, away from the rocks to safety with minutes to spare.

Upon returning they were informed by fellow lifeguards Damien Longotano and Moritz Neumann, both of St Davids, that another vessel had struck rocks and was in danger of sinking.

The quartet raced to the southern end of the harbour to the second incident and managed to beach the boat, much to the relief of the two local occupants.

Team manager Chris Parry said: “Whilst we are only visiting Australia to compete at the world championships our primary role is always to prevent loss of life at sea and the boys did Wales proud today.”
