Milford Haven’s Torch Theatre has hit the limelight after receiving three nominations in this year’s Theatre Critics of Wales Awards.

The winners will be announced during a ceremony at Sherman Cymru in Cardiff tomorrow (Saturday) which will be hosted by broadcaster Nicola Heywood Thomas.

Welsh actress Helen Griffin has been nominated for best female performance in the English language for her leading role in the critically acclaimed Who’s Afraid of Rachel Roberts?, which she co-wrote with Dave Ainsworth.

The show performed to sell-out audiences at the Torch last spring and will play the Edinburgh Fringe Festival later this year.

The theatre’s co-production with Theatr Mwldan and Mappa Mundi, A Midsummer Night’s Dream, directed by Peter Doran, also picked up two nominations, for best ensemble and best use of digital online.

Mr Doran, the Torch’s artistic director, said: “I am absolutely delighted that our work has been recognised with three nominations at this year’s Theatre Critics Awards.

“We’re extremely proud of the work we produce in Pembrokeshire and it is particularly edifying to see our productions achieve national acclaim.”

Organised by the Young Critics Scheme based in Bridgend, the critics awards celebrate the successes of theatre in Wales each year, as voted for by the critics.
