Marine code to protect Pembs wildlife

A unique publication that aims to ensure people enjoy Pembrokeshire’s stunning coastline without disturbing local wildlife has been relaunched for 2013.

Thanks to support from Valero, the Pembrokeshire Marine Code is a guide on how to minimise disturbance to wildlife while exploring the beautiful Pembrokeshire coastline.

It has been produced by the Pembrokeshire Coastal Forum working with local wildlife tour operators, conservationists and coastal experts.

Jane James, Valero policy, government and public affairs manager, said: “Pembrokeshire is fortunate to have such a wealth of marine species in our coastal environment, and this leaflet will help ensure that all of us who use the Pembrokeshire coast can do so safely and sustainably.”

As increasing numbers of people explore the coast by boat, from kayak to motor cruiser, the code details a set of agreed ‘codes of conduct’ and highlights the international importance of the wildlife inhabiting areas such as Skomer and Ramsey islands.

It also outlines areas to be avoided at certain times of the year to allow seals, seabirds and cetaceans the space and peace they need to live, feed and rear their young.

Ten thousand leaflets containing maps and best practice for Pembrokeshire will be distributed countywide.

The Port of Milford has assisted with promotion by supplying a leaflet to every mooring holder on the Milford Haven waterway.

In addition, 500 waterproof copies are available for those in smaller craft such as kayaks, and can be ordered for just the price of postage from the Pembrokeshire Marine Code website.

Marine code officer Tom Luddington said: ‘The Pembrokeshire Marine Code is now well-established in Pembrokeshire, and these leaflets really help you to plan ahead.

“Following the code will ensure you are doing your bit to help avoid causing any disturbance.

It’s fantastic to be able to distribute these best practice leaflets now, as we are at the very beginning of the sea bird breeding season which runs from March 1st to the end of July.”
