A HAVERFORDWEST doctor was named in the New Year Honours list published on Monday (December 30).

Dr Anne Barnes, 62, of Haverfordwest, is an associate specialist in oncology and end of life care at ward 10, Withybush Hospital.

She is to become an MBE (Member of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire) for services to cancer patients in Pembrokeshire.

Dr Barnes, who received a letter informing her of the honour about five weeks ago, said: “It was a bit of a surprise to say the least. I was just astonished. It had not occurred to me something like this would have happened.

“I feel I don’t deserve it. I’m delighted, but it’s not a one-man show on the ward – all of the staff here are excellent, it’s very much a team effort.”

A mother-of-five, Lancashire-born Dr Barnes qualified as a doctor in Liverpool in 1974 and initially worked on the Isle of Man. She later returned to Liverpool to specialise in oncology.

Having moved to Pembrokeshire in 1983, Dr Barnes has worked in the county ever since, minus a stint in New Zealand, and has been in her current role since 1998.

“Being given an honour is lovely and it’s reassurance that perhaps we are doing something right, what with all the talk of problems in the NHS.”

She added: “Mum will be delighted.”

Hywel Dda University Health Board chairman Chris Martin said: “We are extremely thrilled that Anne’s hard work and dedication over many years to patients at Withybush Hospital has been recognised.

“I have had personal experience of the compassion she shows daily in her work as she cared for my mother and I am delighted for Anne.”

@Tttoommy.County Councillor Thomas Tudor is a fellow healthcare
professional of Doctor Barnes and as such must be delighted at the honour bestowed on the fine lady and colleague.
For the record he is NOT a member of the ruling IPPG and if you care to check his credentials you might find common ground with his views.

Surely in this day and age there is no need for an award system such as this and to give the awards to people who are doing the job they are well paid to carry out is farcical.
Why should the doctor who delivered Georgie, the latest royal spare receive an honour, There are many doctors in England and Wales assisting in the births of children and to give an award just for delivering a so called royal baby is incredible.
Whilst we should take account of what Cllr Tudor thinks, perhaps he should pay more attention to his other source of income i.e Pembrokeshire County Council at County Hall.and the cost of that body on the ratepayers of Pembrokeshire

Congratulations Dr Barnes; You thoroughly deserve this public recogntion .
When I and other members of my family were affected by cancer, Withybush, Ward 10 and Dr Anne Barnes were absolutely marvellous. If you think you can't laugh, and I mean really laugh, while going through something as scary and gruelling as cancer treatment, you need to go up to ward 10. Alongside medical expertise there is a warmth and camaraderie that will get you through.; much of this is due to Dr Barnes' influence and the rest of the great team; we need to ensure there is no threat to the services provided by these guys !

Unboubtedly a FANTASTIC WONDERFUL Doctor but let's not forget that thanks to free parking in most hospitals and free prescriptions for all the Welsh NHS (which had as many trusts as Engfland and therefore as many over paid managers - reminds you of BPJ?) cannot afford 24 life saving cancer drugs freely available in England despite the "post code lottery the press go on about) or stroke centres that are common in England

@Tttoommy.Do your really believe that there is a direct link between
free parking/free prescriptions and availability of drugs?
I thought this thread was about a great honour for a great doctor, not
a soapbox for other issues!!

Do you REALLY think this fabulous human being wouldn't like to be able to prescribe 24 life saving cancer drugs freely available in Engfand ? or is she happy that the money is spent on MORE senior managers, more free parking, more free prescriptions for colds and piles? You really are a STUPID STUPID IDIOT IF you think thyt is the case - there is a budget per patient, it has been until recently higher in Wales than England YET we have fewer drugs, ferwr stroke centres, we don't have the latest surgery techniques for breast cancer or for prostate cancer - your stupidity REALLY makes me angry

May I say I am disappointed in human beings If they vote my and similar comments down - by doing that they want to pay more taxes for less support, for more over paid managers, more corruption - less support IF they are old, sick or have chances of being flooded out , less chance of getting decent treatment If they have a stroke or more likely to die If they have cancer - I am not a sociopath but a high functioning ... oh never mind, you'd not understand you silly stupid people:(

as for the corrupt - well you can I guess understand why THEY'd vote me down
