A Pen-y-Cwm builder who years ago jokingly named one of his houses Llaregub is now building himself a role in Dylan Thomas' fictional village.

Jeff Tierney had no intention of auditioning as an extra in the film version of Under Milk Wood when he drove through Solva last May.

"I saw all these people outside the village hall. I wound down my window to ask what was going on," he said. "They told me I was too late for the auditions but they took a photo and my contact details.

"On Friday I had a phone call saying one of the extras had dropped out. I had a costume fitting on Saturday and was on set on Monday."

Mr Tierney is playing a mechanic in one scene and is also involved in filming a night scene. Lots of locals from Solva and the surrounding villages have been cast as extras.

"It's been brilliant," he said. "It's amazing; the stars that are in it. They are being fantastic, giving out autographs, stopping for photos. They are so approachable. The crew and make up people are also brilliant.

"Just watching everything happening is great. I can't imagine how much it all costs, the cameras, the cranes. It's amazing just to see it."

The film version of Under Milk Wood stars Rhys Ifans, Charlotte Church, Neil Kinnock and Gareth Edwards. It is being directed by Kevin Allen, who was behind the cult Welsh film Twin Town.

The production, which is being partly financed by S4C, will be filmed in English and Welsh, with the former being broadcast at Christmas and the latter sold for worldwide viewing.
