One hundred years on from the outbreak of the First World War, the British Red Cross will be exhibiting a number of historic items at Pembrokeshire County Show which starts tomorrow (Tuesday).

The exhibition will showcase the work of the Red Cross in Wales since the outbreak of the war to the present day.

Volunteers will be dressed in uniforms worn by their predecessors during both world wars and examples of food parcels and historical first aid implements will be on display. There will also be medals, photographs and stories capturing the extraordinary work of Red Cross volunteers throughout the decades.

Denise John, regional manager at the Red Cross, said: “Volunteers in Pembrokeshire and across Wales provided a vital humanitarian service during the war. Nursing in auxiliary hospitals, driving ambulances and raising funds were only some of the ways in which voluntary aid detachments (VADs) helped the sick and wounded.

“Our exhibition is a way to pay homage to them, and the thousands that have followed in their footsteps. We are looking forward to welcoming visitors to learn about our history and find out more about the services that operate here today.”

As well as appreciating the exhibition, visitors can speak to staff members about volunteering opportunities across Wales. There will also be a pop-up shop offering a range of new and donated items for sale.
