A PEMBROKESHIRE town is urging the county council to give the thumbs up to the work of graffiti artists which has brightened up a local building.

Over 200 people have signed an online petition backing the dramatic mural on the Span Arts building in Narberth after the authority said it would need official permission.

The dramatic mural has been has been described as ‘inspirational, creative and interesting’ and ‘bringing an upbeat contemporary vibe to the community’.

Backers include local MP Simon Hart, who has described the new look of the building on the Town Moor as ‘brilliant’.

The work was carried out this summer by professional graffit artists Peaceful Progress and features an image from Bianco, a performance by No Fit State Circus which was brought to Narberth by Span Arts, Theatr Mwldan and the Torch Theatre last year.

Said Span Arts manager Gwen Watson: “Since the re-design, Span Arts has found itself the talk of the town, as well as the subject of many photographs taken by members of the public.

“It’s even drawn attention from Pembrokeshire County Council who - while admitting they like the mural - have advised Span Arts that the mural is considered advertising, and therefore requires a permit.

“Span Arts have had no trouble collecting over 200 signatures via an online petition, and numerous letters of support from local businesses to influence their retrospective advertising application.”

Said council spokesman Len Mullins: “The mural was brought to our attention and we have asked Span Arts to submit an application for advertising consent, as it contains telephone numbers within its images.”
