A Pembroke Dock man seen carrying a machete he used to cultivate a bramble patch for cannabis growing is due to be sentenced at crown court today (Friday).

At Haverfordwest magistrates court last month Dean Phillips, 25, of Kavanagh Court admitted being in possession of a bladed article in Pembroke on September 26.

An earlier charge of possessing an offensive weapon was withdrawn.

Prosecuting, Ellie Morgan said Phillips, initially carrying a spade, had been seen walking in the Ferry Lane area at 3pm.

Phillips was seen climbing a boundary fence and making for nearby bushes, only to return half an hour later carrying what was later identified as a machete, wrapped in a hoodie.

Police were called and a Phillips, who matched the description given, was seen coming out of his garden.

The one-and-a-half foot long machete was found on his window sill.

During police interview Phillips said he had used the machete for hacking down brambles, intending to establish a cannabis plantation next summer.

The court heard Phillips was subject to an ongoing community order imposed by Swansea Crown Court in July for a previous offence.

Magistrates sent the case to crown court following the breach of the order. The case was adjourned to today (Friday, November 14) for reports and Phillips was granted conditional bail.

He is listed to appear in front of Mr Recorder R J Philpotts in Court One this morning.
